All plumbing systems use two different subsystems made of pipes. One brings freshwater inside the apartment complex and the
other transports wastewater outside. Freshwater systems use pressure to disburse water to where it’s needed in the building. Wastewater systems don’t need pressure because this type of water naturally moves down and out of the building. Drainage pipes always point downward to let wastewater flow through.
Plumbers categorize apartment buildings as either multi-story or multiple dwellings. Multi-story complexes refer to those that are too tall to apply pressure from the municipal water supply to reach the entire building. Vertical, taller buildings require systems that can reach independent units.
Although multiple dwellings also have separate units, they don’t experience the same water pressure issues. These types of dwellings can use plumbing systems similar to those in a regular house. As water trickles into a multiple dwelling apartment from the municipal supply, a system of faucets, valves, and pipes ensures that it’s distributed through a unit’s kitchen and bathroom.
